BiOrb and BiUbe are the names given to a range of designer aquariums which claim to make aquarium keeping simple and straightforward. They are all made from acrylic which makes them light and safe from shattering. All of these aquariums come complete with internal filtration, ceramic media, light unit, water treatment, fish food and a full set of instructions. Currently there are two ranges – Classic and Life.

Classic BiOrb and BiUbe

The Classic range consists of globes (biOrb) and  cylinders (biUbe). Pictured left is the so called baby biOrb which holds 4 gallons of water. It comes as standard with a 5w lamp but it is shown here with the optional ‘baby moonlight’ lighting. This unit automatically turns off the main daylight bulb when the room becomes dark allowing the aquarium to be illuminated by a blue moonlight.

There is also an 8 gallon version called the biOrb 30 (30l) and a 16 gallon version called the biOrb 60 (60l). They come in a variety of colours for the top and bottom trim. The 60 is shown here in silver. They come with halogen lighting as standard but have an option for what is called ‘Intelligent LED lighting’.  This Intelligent Light replicates natural daylight, with a gradual sunrise and sunset which automatically fades into a blue moonlight after the day time cycle has completed similar to the baby moonlight lighting shown above.

There is also a special version of the biOrb 30 only available in the UK called the Spy BiOrb Edition pictured here in black. This is the latest addition to the biOrb range. Coated in a colour to match the lid and base. The SpyOrb Edition is available in white, black and silver and is supplied complete with an internal filter, ceramic media, air pump, plug top 12 volt transformer, halogen light unit (LED light is optional at extra cost), water treatment, fish food and full set of instructions

The biUbe range of cylinders hold 9 gallons of water and because they have a small footprint are ideal as a focal point in a small flat, study, kitchen or bedroom. Made from either clear acrylic or blue tinted acrylic they come in a choice of a silver or black lid and base. Standard lighting is halogen but ‘Intelligent LED lighting’ is also available.

There is a special version of the biUbe called the ‘biUbe Pure’ which is made completely of clear acrylic and has intelligent LED  lighting as standard.

BiOrb Life Collection

The BiOrb Life aquariums are either square or rectangular. They come in either red, black or white. The square one has a capacity of 8 gallons (30l) and the rectangular, known as ‘Portrait’, comes in two sizes, either 12 gallons (45l) or 16 gallons (60l). They all come with intelligent LED lighting as standard together with all of the standard equipment included in the rest of the biOrb range.

  • BiOrb Timer – Reminds you to feed the fish, change the water and change the filter cartridge
  • Intelligent Heater
  • BiOrb Swap Tops – To change the lid and base colour of the biOrb
  • Baby BiOrb Swap Tops – To change the lid and base colour of the baby biOrb

What Do People Say About Them?

On the whole purchasers are very pleased with their biOrbs. They are easy to setup and simple to maintain. They arrive with everything you need including instructions. For somebody who wants a beautiful looking aquarium without a lot of the work that is normally involved they are a winner. You do still have to change the filter medium and some of the tank water regularly and because of the filtration you probably would not consider using live plants.

Some people have complained that two or three goldfish have made the tank very dirty. However it is necessary to realise that these are all small aquaria and although the aeration is very good they should not be filled with lots of large fish. Goldfish grow to a large size so it is best to stick to minnows and the like.

Retail prices range from about £60 for the baby biOrb to about £270 for the biOrb Life Portrait 60l.

Baby biOrb

I’ve had various aquariums since I was a kid, but for some reason I’ve always like just plain, glass fishbowls instead of big, clunky tanks. To me, they are just more aesthetically pleasing but keeping fish alive and happy in a simple glass bowl is next to impossible which is why I am so incredibly happy with the biOrb bowl. It’s a fully working aquarium with the pleasing, classic bowl shape…

I have been keeping fish on and off for several years now and I have to say I love this tank. I knew it was 9 gallons but for some reason I was surprised by the size of it when I took it out. The filtration system is really great and I am happy the instructions talk about SLOWLY putting fish into the tank…
